Brazilian sandal brand Havaianas, which does some crazy, colorful ad work at home via AlmapBBDO (click here for a recent sample), is expanding its marketing range. A multimedia U.S. campaign from BBDO/New York is led by this crazy, colorful series of 3-D rubber-enhanced murals in Manhattan. The first three walls in the PDF feature art by a pair of U.K.-based guys known as McFaul, and the final two are the work of Finnish artist Kustaa Saksi. This being Havaianas, the brief "stressed color and elements from nature," says BBDO AD James Clunie. "Part of the reason we did these in the first place was to give people in the city a visual respite from their immediate surroundings, and we knew early on that drawing from nature would be a relevant source of imagery."

On the specs side, adds AD Chuck Tso, "The artists were given the dimensions of the wall spaces and commissioned to come up with original flat art. This was blown up and stenciled onto the walls, then hand-painted by an outdoor company. We had them paint directly onto the brick surfaces, which are texturally interesting." The McFaul guys, who do a lot of ad work, clearly found the whole project texturally interesting. To quote from their website, "This, Ladies and Gentlemen, is possibly the maddest, most totally funny and bonkersness project we've ever had the pleasure of undertaking . . . designing some massive wall murals in NYC for the totally cool Havaianas flip-flops. Mwahahahaha . . . how we laughed on a daily basis. Awesome!" Indeed, of this lead piece, Clunie notes, "I think the worms are pretty funny. Ultimately, we want people to walk away with a good feeling about the brand."

They may be walking away with more than that — there are plans to create a line of limited-edition flip-flops based on the murals. There's also wall art in the works for Miami and L.A.
