An interstellar reply.

To generate buzz for the premiere of its series Chasing UFOs, the National Geographic Channel is launching a social media campaign that aims to send a crowdsourced reply to the mysterious 'Wow Signal' recorded by scientists in the 1970s.

In 1977, scientists picked up a 72-second transmission from outer space, known as 'The Wow! Signal', the origins of which are still unexplained. The 'Wow Reply' campaign asks whether this was in fact an interstellar tweet, and seeks to create a reply. Participants in the project, developed by Campfire, need to tweet a message with the hashtag #chasingUFOs on June 29th. National Geographic will gather all the tweets in one data packet and blast it into outer space on August 15th (the 35th anniversary of the Wow Signal) using a radar transmission facility. The website, developed by Neo-Pangea will feature live Twitter updates from the telescope facility.
