Iconic Monsters Discuss Their Weekend Plans in Hilarious Campaign for Spectrum

But There's Something Even More Evil Going On, in Campaign From Boutique Agency Something Different

Monsters are fun when they're frightening. But they're a total blast when they're just being their plain old selves, as in this hilarious campaign from Spectrum, created out of New York creative boutique Something Different and directed by David Shane of O Positive.

The campaign for the Charter Communications brand sees the Grim Reaper, the Werewolf, the Mummy and a mad scientist on the train commute back to the burbs, dishing nonchalantly about their weekend plans like everyday Joes. The Werewolf, for example, plans on "Just a lot of howling, a bit of me time," the scientist will be working on his death ray, while the Mummy, who has an oddly Draculean accent, will be "summoning the Apocalypse" and bringing the orange slices to his twins' soccer game.

Things get testy, however, as the rain pours down and the Grim Reaper's kids text him like mad, complaining that their satellite dish isn't working. "TV that cuts out in the rain is evil," the endline goes.

"We all just laughed at the idea of these evil people thinking someone else was horrible," said Something Different Chief Creative Tommy Henvey in a statement. "It gave us a way to make our point that felt a little more unusual."

What makes the spot is the monsters, impeccably cast and costumed. The contrast between their fearsome yet funny makeup and their soccer monster talk makes for big laughs.

"The tricky thing was taking these super tropey 1930's movie monster cliches and making them feel like dimensional characters -- four guys who've been commuting together forever -- with their own insecurities, problems, petty pride," Director Shane told Creativity. "And so we really needed amazing comedic actors with an emphasis on acting that could play the believable emotions under the surface of the scene. We tried to be as honest as we could with the comedy -- no overly theatrical gestures, no accents. Except for the Mummy, played by this amazing actor, Tobias, who initially read for a vampire character. We lost the character but loved him so much we put him in this spot-- which may explain why an Egyptian Pharaoh from 3000 BC talks like he's from Transylvania. Sometimes funny wins over honesty."

Three more spots featuring the monsters will follow. The campaign is Something Different's first work for Charter Communications. Mr. Henvey founded the company last year along with fellow Ogilvy vet Patti McConnell, who serves as executive producer.
