Only a few will win Oscars on Sunday night, but Volvo is recognizing the rest of Los Angeles by offering its own version, delivered by Volvo XC60-driving actors whose first name is Oscar. Volvo invited people to nominate Los Angeles residents on Facebook on Feb. 19. For this Oscar, there are no criteria beyond being a legal U.S. adult resident with a Los Angeles zipcode. Eight winners chosen at random will be visited by Oscar Rodriguez or one of three other Oscars on Feb. 20 or 21, with winners announced on social media on Feb. 22. The prize: $380 worth of Swedish products, including Harmon Kardon headphones, Orrefors crystal and a Gravlax Restaurant gift certificate.
This isn't the first time Volvo and its agency Grey New York cleverly piggyback on an event the car maker isn't sponsoring or buying expensive airtime to advertise on. During the Super Bowl, they ran a Twitter contest that got mileage out of other car brands' pricey TV spots. During the game, viewers could tweet a hashtag to nominate someone who deserved a Volvo XC60 every time any car spot aired during the live event.
